Modest wine-production in countries such as Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, or Colombia. Viniculture here goes back to the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadoes. European viniculture came to South America with the Italians in the 19th century. The first attempts at growing vines were made in Brazil with the Criolla vine, which was introduced by the Argentinians in the 17th century.
The grapes are mostly processed to Pisco or other brandies. Spanish brandy-companies such as Domecq snd Gonzalez-Byass and the French Cognac-companies like Hennesey and Martell show great persistance in South America. But this trend is changing. For over 20 years delicious red and white wines have been made in Peru. Spakling winesa re also produced.
The high humidity and constant rains made viniculture difficult. The grapes often rot, and are susceptable to mildew.
