A large variety of Riesling can be found in this mild climate. The Bergstrasse (mountain street) is a typical white wine area (95%). Next to Riesling, the Sylvan, Ruländer, and Grey Burgundy dominate.
"Germany's Riviera" inspired the Romans. The mixture of small vineyards with forests and vegetable gardens and the little vintner huts strewn throughout, give the Hessian Bergstrasse a special romantic flair. The mild climate with an early Spring give wines on the sunny slopes great flavor. On the 400ha of various soils excellent white vines grow (95%).
One of this area's most important trademarks is the variety of Riesling wines that have a comfortable scent, and a strong fruity acidity. Because of the various soils the Riesling reaches a widely fanned palette of tastes - from fresh and light to strong and juicy. In amount the Müller-Thurgau and Sylvan follow the Riesling. After Ruländer, Grey Burgundy, and Spicy Traminer are grown. The new breeds are Kerner, Ehrenfelser, and Scheurebe. Especially the Scheurebe gives off racy wines of an original type. The few red wiens like Late Burgundy and Portuguese are usually too thin but one has to become accustomed to the white wines as well. After a few glasses their full quality is clear. The Dornfelder and the new breed Rotberger are the area's specialties. The region's assortment is broadened by sparkling wines and brandy. Most of the Bergstrasse's wines get their full aroma after two years storage and should be drunk around then.
On May 1st there is the annual Bergstrasser wine-hike - a good opportunity to meet the landscape and wines. But on other occasions one can find hospitality and culinary specialties.
