Baden is the southernmost growing area in Germany, and counts to the Wine-Region B. The warm climate is ideal for many types of Burgundy (45%), which is followed by the Riesling.
The wines are often said to have been 'spoiled by the sun' - Baden is the southernmost wine region in Germany, and is climatically favored. The growing area of 16.000 ha is split into appr. eight areas, eaach with tis own micro-climate, soil condition, and inclines, so that a wide assortment of wines is developed.
Baden is the only region in Germany that belongs to the EU-wine region B. Because of this there are higher demands for quality and smaller amounts are produced. The growing region is mostly used by vintner guilds. About one fourth of the area is amde up of vineyardss and producers of other things.
The leading vines in baden are the Riesling and Burgundy, followed by Müller-Thurgau and Ruländer - the country's specialty. A specialty of Baden is still the rosé wines named Spätburgunder Weißherbst. A new exclusivity is the Badisch Rotgold, a blend of Ruländer and Spätburgunder. Baden also offers two new wines. The one is called Debüt - a very young, but still complete wine - and the Baden Selection - a strictly controlled noble wine, for which only certain vines are permitted. Baden's competency for sparkling wines with based on a pure Late Burgundy sparkling wine, white pressed Blanc de Noirs or Cuvées with other types of Burgundy.
Next to excellent wines, Baden also offers an inventive and variable cuisine. Several peoples and nations have left their traces and ideas in the course of history. The wines of the region and their character are best met in Baden itself, but there is also opportunity in Munich to do so. Annually there is the 'Baden-Württember-Classics' at the end of October.
