Barossa Valley is said to be Australia's most important wine-growing region, and is most known for its red wines. Grapes from the Eden Valley are processed here as well.
Barossa Valley was peopled by the religiously persecuted Lutherans in 1840, and has the charming peculiarity of being the home of the best Shiraz grapes in Australia. This is also where Australia's oldest wokring vineyards are. Penfolds, Orlando, and Yalumba are among the larger wine-houses that Barossa counts as its own.
This valley has its origin 55km northeast of Adelaide and follows the Para River. It stretches towards the Barossa Mountains at heights between 240 and 550 m above sea-level. The warm climate and rich fertile soil with slate offer good conditions for Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Barossa founds it reputation on red wines. The Shiraz winesa re excellent and very concentrated. Sémillon is simply fermented in barrels which gives it a larger complexity. Several vintners have recently been producing elegant storable wines, that can be comapred to those from cooler areas.
Traditional as well as ultra-modern methods are used for wine-production. Traditionally small open oak barrels are used in which the wines are fermented on mash at high temperatures.
The wine festival in Tanunda is especially interesting for tourists, where there is one of the best wine-auctions in the country.
