Riverland is also called Austrlia's great barrel. The giant growing-area with the large, refinery type cellars stretches around 240 km northeast of Adelaide.
The majority of Australian table wines, which is sold in bags or disposable bottles, or exported in tanks, are from this area. Riverland has managed to change the drinking of Australians in recent decades. Many beer drinkers were won over by the wines. Today the consumption per head is double that of England.
The many hours of sun, neverending water supplies, and fertile soils make large harvests. All styles of wines, from sparkling to sweet wines are made.
The region isn't always appreciated and especially wine snobs tend to look down Riverland, but viniculture is very important for the income of Riverland.
