Many popular wines come from Clare Valley, especially the Riesling and red wines belong to Australia's best.
Clare Valley is only about a fourth the size of Barossa Valley. The climate is warmer. Some sites are far above the oceanm which gives the wines fruitiness, that it can usually get in cooler climates. The vines mostly grown on various limestone soils.
The Riesling succeeds well in this region, some exaples are seen as classic. In young years the winesa re deep and clean with fine scents of lemons. After a few years storage the develop an increasing complexity as well as aroma of petrol and roast. The cool night during ripening give the wines a stiff, shy character. The scent of the Shiraz graoes often reminds of eucalyptus.
The grapes are picked by machines. Only the best are picked manually. The wines, with exception of the red, are processed by fairly modern methods.
