In this relatively new area, the red wines made from the Bordeax-versions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec are the most successful.
This region was 'discovered' by Dr. John Gladstone in 1965. Shortly after he planted the first vines and in only a short time this area has made quite a name for itself.
Thanks to the temperate climate and plenty of rain, the growing area of about 500 ha doesn't have to be irrigated artificially. The humidity of the soil is kept at a constant while the vines are growing by the good drainage of the sandy ground on top of clay. Together with the climate these are good conditions for viniculture.
The peppery Shiraz wines that were made at the end of the 1990's are very promising. The white wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are often fresh and sour with a full taste. The Chardonnay and Verdelho make fairly good wines as well. The wine production methods are very modern among the younger vineyards.
