On one hand, the climate makes viniculture difficult, on the other it does give the wines a definite elegance. The white wines from the Rhine Riesling are well-known.

This region was first planted with vines in 1965. it belongs to Australia's largest wine regions, but the distances between vineyards can be very large. Great Southern used to be called Frankland/Mount Barker.

Great Southern is marked byt a wild landscape and an unruly cliamte with frost, hail, and strong winds. The temperatures here are definitely the lowest in the country. The rock ground have only few nutrients, which keeps harvests per hectare fairly low.

The best results are found with Rhine Riesling and Pinot Noir, wines with high acidity and a vegetative sensitivity. The wines are elegantly perfumed, with high, fresh acidity, and light to medium structure. If the grapes are fully ripe, the red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon can be full and delicious. The grapes are mostly processed at a central site like Plantagenet, but are sold under their specific names.
