Mount Barker was the first sub-region in Australia to secure recognition.
The sub-region is located on the Plantagenet plateau with the Mount Barker hill at its centre. It is gently undulating and is distinguished from the other winegrowing areas of the Great Southern region by its comparatively poor "marri" soils which are lateritic gravelly sandy loams or sandy loams directly derived from granite rock. The climate is Mediterranean.
The two great "continental" grape varieties Shiraz and Riesling have most definitely distinguished themselves at Mount Barker. They have an intensely appealing lime-citrus character on nose and palate ans an ability to age.
Large quanities of fruit are sent to Perth and other winemaking centres for processing.
