This area remains a rich mixed framing district but again poor economic returns have abliged some farmers to diversify by planting vineyards.
The urban centre of the region is Bridgetown. It has a slightly higher rainfall than Boyup Brook, but a similar mixed farming economy. The wine history of the region is very recent, dating from 1978 when local farmer Max Fairbrass felt the region might be suitable because the table grapes grown years before by his grandfather. Today the region camprises about 200 ha of vineyard.
The soils are gravelly on the divides with yellow soils and red earths on valley slopes. There are dry summer months and a high winter rainfall. Temperatures are not excessive and it can be called a cool region.
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz can be named als the principal varieties. Its too soon for any pronouncement, but medium to full-bodied reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are likely to be prominent.
