Riverina is seen as a producer of mass wines, and the region concentrates on quantity as opposed to quality.
Since 1912 viniculture has been in Riverina. Murrumbidgee as well as the addition of Irrigation Area are shortened to MIA. Artificial irrigation is required in the area to allow the vines to grow. The earth is very fertile. Large harvests are the result.
Anonymus mass wines are the characteristic product of this wine region. Most wines are sold as "Bag-in-Box". Especially the white wines went through a bit of development, even though some vintners are able to make good red wines through modern production methods. Half of the Sémillon grapes grow in Riverina. The most important vines are Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Colombard, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. By accident noble rot was found in the De-Bortoli-Traube, which led to immediate success.
The grapes are generally picked by machines, which makes harvesting at night possible.
