Pyrenees is Western Victoria's second largest wine region, and stretches around the communities of Avoca and Moonambel.
Vines were planted here in the 19th century. Modern viniculture only goes back to 1960, when the French wine giant Rémy Martin founded the vineyard Château Rémy. Originally brandy was made, but today the production includes table, and sparkling wines, Today the vineyard is called Blue Pyrenees Estate. Ten years later several other companies followed, all of them small family businesses.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the absolute stars of the region. The red wines have a dense, earthy fruit, and sometimes extreme tannins. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay can make impressive white wines.
