The liqueur wines have made this former gold-digger region to a respectable wine growing region. Rutherglen Muscat and Rutherglen Tokay are among the most famous of the region.
The government paid a premium for every planted hectare towards the end of the 19th century, This made the former gold-digger center interesting for vintners. The liqueur wines were exported to England for a long time. The phylloxera vastatrix caused great damages in North East Victoria at the end of the 19th century. In the mid 1990's new vineyards were founded, mostly in the cooler areas of the region. The most interesting wine region of Victoria is in King Valley.
The harvests are pretty high thanks to many hours of sunshine and the fertile soils.
Around the city of Rutherglen strong wines are made. The Rutherglen Muscat and the Rutherglen Tokay are strong and tasty with long aftertaste. They are made like portwine and belong to the region's famous items. The red wines enjoy a good reputation as well though they can be found to be too heavy for the untrained palate. Traditional production methods are used most.
The region is very friendly to visitors with many restaurants and tasting-possibilities.
