Rutherglen, on the border to New South Wales was Victorias most important wine region for over a hundred years.
The regional, as well as the English market were overlfowed with huge amounts of heavy sweet wines and full red wines. The victorian country houses and the often quite grand winehouses still give off proof of this.
The relatively warm climate gives the region its great success. Red wine grapes can ripen well here and make wines of deep color, powerful tannins, and high alcohol content.
The Liqueur Muscat and Tokay with their high alcohol content are still the main work horses of the region. They ripen in barrels for many years before reaching the market. The Liqueur Muscat is made from Muscat de Frontignan grapes, but the Liqueur Tokay has nothing to do with Hungary or the Alsace region, but is made from the Muscadelle grape.
