The enormous vine-areas of North West Victoria stretch from Mildura towards the northeast all the way to Swan Hill and then back to Echuca, though in smaller form.
Together with Riverland and Riverina North West Victoria donates more that half of its extensive area to Australia's wine barrels. A hundred years ago the area was specialised in the production of dessertwines and brandy. In Midura the Mildara Winery Ozeane produced an excellent Sherry. Table wines were hardly produced.
Only with the beginning of artificial irrigation which was introduced around the turn of the last century, brought the great change. Today Mildura has made itself a name for the production of quality wines. Without the irrigation these giant harvests of healthy grapes wouldn't be possible for thr reasonably priced fruity table wines. Australia's international reputation for table wines is based on the wines from this area.
