The region Balaton-Felvidék, which was known as Balatonmellék until 1999, reaches from the Balaton Lake to the Veszprémer Plateau. The ground is mostly limestone, dolomite and mergel.
Most terraces are on steep foothills where clay is mixed with volcanic basalt. There are sour strong wines with the region's typical spicyness.
