Côte de Nuits is without doubt the wine area with the largest assortment of quality wines in the world. The vineyards are mostly small, only few sites are owned by a single owner. The name of the owner on the label sheds a little light on the confusing setup of the area. Most vineyards face East.
The Côte de Nuits stretches from Marsannay to the South to Comblachien and Corgolain. The most important communities are Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, and Vosne-Romanée. The ground is made up of fatty, red-brown marly soil, that is mixed with the eroded and deposited limestone from the plateau above the incline. together with sand and gravel these soils offer optimal conditions for Pinot Noir.
The red Burgundy got its good reputation from those that are from Côte de Nuits. The are soft, strong, and have great storable potential. The few white wines made here don't reach the quality and class of the red wines. The most important vine for red wines is the Pinot Noir, for white wines the Chardonnay. Gamay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Aligoté are also grown, but not processed to quality wines.
