Many good red wines are also made here. The Côte de Beaune lies south of Côte de Nuits, the vinesyards are generally a bit larger and the slopes flatter. The best communities are Aloxe-Corton, Pommard, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chasagne-Montrachet.
The Route Nationale 74 splits the area. East of the road the ground is dark and fertile, and so less suited for viniculture. The bare slopes west of the road of limestone and flintstone are far better suited. The vines are raised small to be able to put the warmth reflected off the ground at night.
Dry white, red, and rosé wines are made. The famous white wines are known for their longevity and concentration as well as their oily and buttery fullness. Their bouquet hints of nuts. Mostly Chardonnay is used, Aligoté is only grown in small amounts. The white wines are slowly aged in oak barrels - same as the red wines. The optimum fullness and body is given to the wines this way.
