This community is rather untypical for the Côte de Beaune with 99% red wine production. The red Corton is the strongest, and tannin-richest of the Côte de Beaune.
Aloxe-Corton lies 33 km south of Dijon and 6.5 km north of Beaune. The Mortagne de Corton is completely covered in vineyards. The Grands Crus are Corton-Charlemagne (exclusively for white wines), and Corton (red and white wines). 22 sites are allowed to use their name in addition to the Corton Grand Cru.
The strong red Corton, which is rich in tannins, is intense and needs time to completely develop its characteristic spüicy final note. Though only a small part of wine production is white, the white Corton Charlemagne is one of the world´s most fascinating Chardonnays. It has a golden color with a flintstone kind of hint of honey. This wine is at its best after 4-5 years storage. Wines with a community name are mostly an exception.
