This community is known in the export market. This shows in the prices, which can seem high at times. Only red wines of densely concentrated structure.
Pommard boders on Volnay in the South, and on Beaune to the north. Other than the two Premiers Crus all sites are in the middle of the incline, between the Roads N 73 and N 74. There are no Grands Crus. The famous and successful vineyards Les Epenots and Le Rugiens Bas, Les Abelets, Les Combes-Dessus, Clos Blancs, and Les Boucherottes are among the 27 Premiers Crus.
The good red wines belong to Côte de Beaune´s fullest- Their structure is thick, they have fewer tannins than those from Corton. The wine cannot be compared to its feminine neighbors in Volnay. The best wines can be stored 10-20 years.
The part clay in the ground is larger than in Beaune. The soil is often smoky from iron oxides. At the higher sites there are lots of rocks. There is a part limestone in some areas up to 3ß%.
