This community with even quality is called the queen of the Burgundy. The appellation includes 23 Premier-Cru's.
The vineyards lie south of Pommard and stretch to the Southeast. The village lies above the vineyards. There are no Grands Crus, but there are 23 Premiers Crus. Some of the nicknames are Les Clos-de-Chênes and En Caillerets.
The red wines are feminine and have the typical scent of violets and red fruits. In young years the wine is stiff with fine structure. After some years storage it develops great finesse and velvet elegance. The best wines should be stored longer than ten years.
The ground conditions vary. Gravel and rock ground on a base of limestone dominates in Les Santenots. Gravel on cliff base is found in Caillerets. White limestone dominates in the vineyards Clos des Ducs, Bousse d'Or, and Taillepied. Pinot Noir is the only vine cultivated.
