The wines from this area are comparable to those from Volnay. Elegant red wines are made, that should be drunk young.
Although Monthélie is in the shadow of Volnay, both areas have lots in common. The vineyards are between Meursault and Volnay, on the inclines above the village Meursault. The growing regions are split into the areas Côteaux de Volnay with Premiers Crus and Vallée d'Auxey-Duresse. There are no Grands Crus, but there are ten Premiers Crus with Sur Lavelle and Les Vignes ondes in the lead.
The red wines of good quality are sold at relatively good prices. The Négociant companies only play a minor role. The majority of the winesa re sold by the vintners themselves or by regional unions.
Above the village there is reddish earth and marl on limestone soil In the valley white limestone dominates. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the leading vines.
