The quality of this old wine-growing areas can sway. The white wine production dominates the 16 Premier-Cru's, though sometimes red wines are permitted.
Vines have been cultivated in Meursault since before the arrival of the monks in Clos de Vougeot. Their popularity is very Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Meursault border on Volnay in the north and on Puligny-Montrachest in the south. South of the village one can find the best sites on soft hills.
Of the 16 Premiers Crus the wines from Les Perriéres (Dessous and Dessus) have the msot finesse and elegance. Les Perriéres wines are closely followed by Les Genevrières (Dessous and Dessus), Les Poruzot, Aux Perrières, Les Petures, Les Gouttes d'Or, and les Charmes (Dessous and Dessus). The white wines often have a large bouquet with hints of nuts and cinnamon. The aftertaste of this strong wine is long.
The soil conditions vary and reach from limestone in Combe de Saint-Aubin, and gravel in the upper sloes to marl and limestone parts in the middle sites and on the side of Blagny-Meursault.
Chardonnay is the leading vine, but Pinot Noir is also cultivated.
