The Chardonnay is the dominating grape of this region. It brings wines with best qualities. Accordingly, the prices are high.
Some of the white wines from the region belong to the best in the world, and have the best qualities that the Chardonnay offers. Puligny-Montrachet lies ten km south of Beaune and borders on Meursault in the north. The best sites are on the higher parts of the incline. The four Grands Crus are Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The more popular sites of the 11 Premeris Crus are Le Champs-Canet, les Chalumeaux, Les Combettes, La Garenne, Les Folatières, Hameau-de-Blagny, and Le Cailleret.
To reach their full potential the best wines need to be store for at least ten years. The taste is very rich, harmonious, and well-balanced. The wines of the Premiers Crus have lower alcohol content but a higher acidity than those from Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet.
The vines grow on various types of limestone soil, gravelly brownstone earth, and gravel. The Premiers Crus sites have a thin layer of earth on top of ancient rock and limestone gravel.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main vines of the region.
