The large growing area makes this region an important producer of Vinho Regional. But today there is more concentration on producing quality wines.
This fertile region northeast of Lisbon has six IPR-classified regions: Almeirim, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém, and Tomar. The red wines have good fruit and are a little bitter in early years. Their character becomes spicier after a few years storage. The quality of this dry white wine isn't very good. The vines grown here are Camarate, Castelao, Mortágua, Periquita, Tinta Miuda, Tricadeira, Boais, Fernao Pires, Jampal, and Terrantez.
