Tokay is probably Hungary's oldest wine district. White wines are produced almost exclusively. The most important vines are the Furmint, the Hárslevelú, and the yellow Muscat.
Though Tokaj-Hegyalja is similar to Mátraalja climatically and geologically, the wines are very different because of the methods of production.
The vintners of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region have switched from oxidative cultivation to reductive cultivation with their combination to the "Tokaj Renaissance", and some truly excellent dry, aromatic quality wines have been made.
