The world's best Chardonnais come from Mâconnais, where they specialized in white wines. Red wines are made too. It's similar to a Beaujolais or a Burgundy.
Maconnais is famous for its white wines. The Chardonnay made here belongs to the world's best. Generally the quality of isn't quite reached, with the exception of Pouilly-Fuissé good quality wines are sold at reasonable prices. The best wine community is Pouilly-Fuissé, followed by Pouilly-Vinzelles and Satin-Véran.
The landscape is hilly and marked by strange rocky formations. The limestone soil with low ph is especially good for Chardonnay. There are also areas with a somewhat sour soils with more clay, sand, or gravel, which is optimal for wines that are drunk young.
The Mâcon Rouge is a red wine, that can resemble a Beaujolais or a Burgundy in character. A simple white wine is the Mâcon Blanc. The Mâcon-Village is always white and has a higher quality. If the wine has 1% more alcohol than it should, it may carry the name „Supérieur“. The wines are only rarely processed in oak barrels. There are exceptions especially among the wines of higher quality. The white wine vines Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc dominate with 70% of the area. The rest is planted with Gamay, Pinot Noir, and some Aligoté.
