In spite of partial over-production which results in swaying quality, the best white wines of the Mâconnais come from Pouilly-Fuissé. Mostly white wines are made.
There are several winetypes here. The white wines are dry as a rule, with light, but definite bouquet, and complex, full flavor. Their full flavor deveopls after at least three years storage. They can be stored for up to eight years.
The appellation includes the villages Pouilly, Fuissé, Solutré, Vergisson, and Chaintré. The wines around Solutré and in Fuissé are seen as the best. If the site is labeled on the bottle, the minimum alcohol content has to be 12%, and so 1% higher than the other.
Only Chardonnay is cultivated. The vines grow on limestone marl and in Chaintré with a hit of clay on granite.
