This is where you can find the best red vines of the Champagne regions. The are the backbone for what will later become the Cuvée. The Bouzy Rouge, a still red wine is comparable with a light, noble Burgundy.
Mailly-Champagne, Puisieulx, Sillery, Verzenay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Verzy, Ambonnay, Louvois, and Bouzy are among the better known Grand Cru sites.
The vines grow on slopes of soils rich in chalk. The vineyards are at optimal height - high enough to be spared from frost and heavy rainfall, but still in protection of trees. The red vines, that later make the backbone of the Cuvées are grown here. The Pinot Noir does really well here. The red still wine „Bouzy Rouge“ (PN) is comparable with a light and noble Burgundy.
The main vines are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. The Pinot Meunier is mostly grown in the northern part of the region, because it isn't as sensitive to frost.
