Red vines of fine quality are cultivated here. The grapes of the Marne Valley give the final wine its full body and bouquet.
The best-known and best wine villages are Tours-sur-Marne and Ay. They have Grand Cru status. The vines grow on a thin humus layer right on chalk cliffs. The vineyards are on the south and southwest slopes. Grapes that give the champagne-blend (cuvée) its fullness and bouquet come from the Marne Valley. The important vines here are Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Chardonnay is only grown in small amounts here.
