Saumur is known in the Loire Valley for its sparkling wines. Dry, pearly and still white wines from Chenin Blanc dominate. Red wines are usually light and fruity.
The white and red wines have a good reputation for fruit and spice in a carming combination. The high acidity of the Chenin Blanc grape gives the sparkling wines good bite and fine freshness.
The best sites are on chalkturf soils. Chenin Blanc dominates. The white wines are made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Red wines are made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Gamay.
