This region makes the best dry wines of the Loire Valley. They reach their full quality after being stored for six to seven years.
Sometimes the wines from Savenniéres outdo great wines from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in quality. No wines from Sauvignon Balnc (along the upper Loire) have the same storability as wines from Chenin Blanc from Savenniéres. The wines have light golden color, and smell of wet wool, with a hint of herbs and oil.
Slate and volcanic rock soils dominate. Only Chenin BLanc is cultivated, which is known locally as Pineau de la Loire.
Fermentation is mostly done traditionally. The wines are filled to the bottle early, where they then ripen.
