The fairly warm autumn and the late harvest let a wine with fill content be made. With 80% it is Germany's leader in Riesling.
The Rhine district is a long, slim stripe along the Rhine. The vineyards stretch for 38 km from Lorchhausen to Main by Wicker just before its delta. The Rhine is forced from its course by the Rhine Mountains. The resulting turn is the reason for the area's specialty. The yards facing South are protected from the cold winds and are warmed by the heat-reflecting Rhine. The climatic advantage favor the growth and ripening of the vines. The harvest is very late and so the vines have the chance to win more fruit and content, The wines are racy, fresh, elegant, and noble.
The absolute leader is the Riesling with 82%. The vine was grown pure in the Rhine district. The recommended storage is three to five years. The Müller-Thurgau is only minor with 4%. Among new breeding there is the Ehrenfelser (Riesling x Sylvan), which hasn't been able to establish itself. The Late Burgundy thrives on slate soil, and has lightly racy and elegant personality. Chardonnay and Kerner are also grown, but only in small amounts.
The vintners of the Rhine district put great emphasis on culinary events like the "Rhine district spring", the "Rhine District Music Festival", the "Eltville Castle Festival", the "Glory Days", and the "Thanksgiving Festival of the Rhine District's vintners". In addition to these festivities the vintners show off their talents annually in Spring and Fall by opening their cellars and having tastings.
