It was the first wine from Tuscany to be classified DOC, and includes red wines, and also rosé wines like the Vin Rispo and the Vin Santo.
Cabernet Sauvignon, which was probably planted here in the 19th century, is allowed to be processed here. But the attack of the phylloxera vastatrix at the end of the century destroyed most of the plants. It is being replanted since the 1960's.
The red wines are similar to a carefully made CHianti with a bit more backbone which results from the part Cabernet. The production methods orient themselves on this wine, the tannins and fresh acidity are seem as ideal.
Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the white Trebbiano and Malvasia vines grow on rocky well-dried grounds. The concetration of aromas is the result.
