This great red wine with enormous concentrated strength and storage ability started as an experiment in the 40's, and won the Cabernet-contest of the magazine Decanter in 1978, and enjoys an excellent reputation.
The Sassicaia is certainly one of the world´s wine pecularities. It is made by the Incisa della Rocchetta from Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc in a small area in Bolgheri. The wine has been sold by the Marquis since 1968 and has since developed into one of Italy´s most expensive wines.

The red wines with great concentration of strength and storability won over their French competitors at the Cabernet Competition in 1978 by combining their elegance with complexity and flavor in riper years. This wine should not be drunk early, since it can seem clumsy and leaves a very confused impression with all its tannins, acids, and aromas. Its best vintages were 1968, ´71. ´72, and ´78.

The vines grow on meagre soils, which, combined with the sunny position of the sites, gives the wines their fine concentration of extracts and aromas. The wines are fermented in controlled tanks. They are then stored in barriques of Slovenian oak, for two years.

The area has DOC status. It was called Vina da Tavola for a long time.
