In spite of being less-known the Nahe-region has all the conditions for excellent wines with its variations in soil The main vines are the Müller-Thurgau, Sylvan, and Riesling
In this small, inconspicuous region the vintners concentrate on their wines' quality. Though wine has been made around the little river Nahe for over 2000 years, there is no real developed viniculture. This is because the wines from this region weren't brought to the market under its name, but as a Mosel-cross or Rhine wine. This fact contrasts the optimal conditions that the wine finds here. The climate reaches from West-European-Atlantic components, which gives this vines their warmth and makes Nahe to one of the regions richest in orchids in Germany. The area is shaped three soils. They reach from slate with manganite in the north, sand, marl, and clay around Bad Kreuzbach and red clayslate west and north of middle Nahe.
The Riesling takes up about a third of the area, and reaches excellent quality in good places. It is closely followed by the Müller-Thurgau, which dominated the region until recent years. Today it takes up about 22%. Typical to the landscape, which isn't pronounced but lasting, is the Sylvan, which thrives here. Other vines are the Kerner, Shy Vine, White- and Blue Burgundy. There are only few red vines. The Bacchus is a new breed, the vineyards are increasing their percentage of Late Burgundy, Portuguese, and Thornfield, which total t about 9%. Most of the Nahe wines were sweet, but dry wines are gaining as well.
The Nahe regions quality isn't obvious to a visitor's first glance. But whoever takes the time, to visit one of the hidden vineyards, will be welcomed with immense hospitality.
