The Torgiano received the DOC-status as the first in Umbria in 1961. Since 1991 it's been raised to DOCG. The red wines have the same combination of vines as the Chianti.
Viticulture in this region goes back to the Etruscans. "Torre di Giano" means as much as Noah´s Tower, for which a symbol can be found in the small town of Torgiano, where there is a small medieval tower.

The Torgiano is at best strong, with bitterness and fullness, and a longevity of 15 years. Rubesco Riserva by Lungarotti is one of Italy´s greatest red wines. The white wines are of strw-yellow color and fresh, herbal bouquet, as well as sour flavor. The best red wines are processed in Slovenian oak barrels. The white are also processed this way, which gives them they color and aroma. The DOC classification is only for simple red and white wines.

Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Ciliegiolo as well as Trebbiano Toscano, Grechetto, Malvasia, and Verdello thrive on meagre, iron-enriched soils with gravel and limestone.
