The simple, praiseworthy, dry wines are well suited for the local cuisine, ut aren't known much outside the region.
This region was formerly known as Albalonga, and has been in this form since the Romans. The wines have a straw-yellow color, a neutral bouquet, and a fruity, clear flavor. The Malvasia is better in its semi-sweet and sweet versions. The taste becomes a bit spicier and rounded. There is also a Spumante-version, which is often used as a thirst-quencher during the summer because of its pleasant freshness. The better samples are light and slightly bitter with lively elebance. The wines are traditionally made in wooden barrels. The reliable production in steel tanks is increasing in importance.
The DOC is for white wines. The vines used are Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia del Lazio, Trebbiano Bianco, Romagnolo, and Giallo.
