The Santa Cruz Mountains are about 75 km south of San Francisco, in close proximity to Silicon Valley. The region was recognized as AVA in 1982. Today there are about 20 exellent vineyards. A famous name is Ridge Vineyard, which was founded in 1959, and lies at a height of 800 m. It is considered to be one of California's top producers.
