The Vernaccia di Oristano is probably the most pleasant of Sardinia's wines. It is a close relative to the Spanish Montilla or a non-sprited Sherry.
The grapes shrink slightly before fermentation. The natural alcohol content slows the oxidation. During this time sublte and very original flavor nuances develop. The typical bitter almond taste is characteristic.
15 communities in the South and West of the island, including Oristano make this wine. Only Vernaccia di Oristano is cultivated. The must have a minimum alcohol content of 15% and be stored in a barrel for two years. To gain the byname Superiore it must be stored for three, for the Riserva four.
