This important vine originally came from Spain. There is only little export - the good reputation is mostly local.
This wine's character is rather unusual. It is strong and alcoholic. The many hours of sun give it lots of fullness and fruit in its scent and flavor. If the wine reaches the alcohol conent of 13.5% it is called Vina da Tavola, and is sold as a Cannonau without the by-name "di Sardegna". These variations are often easier to drink. In spite of the high alcohol content the Cannonau cannot be stored for more than three years.
This wine has carried the DOC-status since 1972/ The name Superiore made be carried after at least two years storagem and a minimal alcohol content of 15%. If the wine has this alcohol content and 10g/l rest sugar it is called Naturalmente Secco. If it is even sweeter it is called Superiore Naturalmente Amabile and S.N. Dolce .
The high alcohol content comes from the natural sugar of the grapes. The fermentation temperature is high, and the wine is processed for at least a year in large wooden barrels - botti. The main vine Cannonau is allowed to be blended with some Bovale, Muristello, Carignano or Pascale.
