Galicia is to the peninsula's northeast and borders on Portugal t the south and on the Altantic Ocean to the North and West. The weather is typical for the region - very moist. The landscape is a mixture between greenage, 'rias' (fjords), chestnut forests, hills, and cliffs. Viniculture is very difficult in this region because the soils are very moist and especially uneven. Many people frm Galicia have emigrated to South America.
Galicia's typical wines are white, fruity, refreshing, and a little sour. The wines from Rias Baxas have been given higher value in recent years. There are two reasons for this: The use of the excellent and nearly forgotten wines of the region, and the cool fermentation in noble-steel tanks.
There are about 136 vines in Galicia, but the most important are the white Albariño, Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and the red Mencía.
