Penedés (DO) lies to the South of Barcelona, and stretches from the coast towards the center. The vines grow on limestone soils. Penedés includes three areas: Bajo Penedés with a typically Mediterranean climate, where mostly dark vines are raised, Medio Penedés with the white Xarel-lo and Parellada vines that are suited for spakling and still wines, and the cold Penedés Superior with the Parellada vines for the production of dry and refreshing white wines and Cava wines.
The most important wines from this region are the sparkling wines, but we mustn't forget the good still wines, that can easily be compared to those from La Rioja.
The local vinesa re the white Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada, Subirat Parent, and the red Monastrell, Cariñena, Samsó, Ull de Llebre, and Garnacha Tinta.
Another sight to see in this area is Villfranca del Penedés, where one of the world's best wines museums is.
