Priorato (DO) is in the Tarragone province, and has about 1.820 ha growing area. The hilly landscape is surrounded by mountains.
The wines from Priorato are very alcoholic, have full body, and are from vines that thrive in the Mediterranean sun and on volcanic ash soils. The typical vines are the red Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Peluda, Syrah, and Merlot and the white Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, and Pedro Ximenez.
The "vino rancio" is a ripe golden-yellow white wine, and is one of the region's specialties.
