"La Meseta" (the plateau) is in Spain's center betwen 500-800 m above sea-level, and includes Castilia and madrid. This region has great conditions for viniculture: lots of sun, flat ground, perfect surroundings, and a well-fitten guild cellary. These guilds play an important part in controlling all of this region's wine production, which is about 35% of Spain's wine production.
Though 90% of production goes to making white wines, the red wines from Valdepeñas has been these most famous from this region since the 16th century thanks to Emperor Karl V (King Karl I of Spain).
The most important vines are the white Airén (graes have ahrd peel that can withstand a lot of heat and contains more cider than other types), and the red Cencibel (Tempranillo).
