Red wines with a high alcohol content are made in Jumilla.
Jumilla (DO), in Murcia's north, is famous for its strong red wines. The wines are mostly pressed from the dark Monastrell vine, and is processed in oak vines. The Jumilla wines have a very high alcohol content and full body. The reason for the high amount of alcohol are the hot summers as well as the chalk and organic materials in the ground. For this reason Jumilla was spared from the phylloxera vastatrix. The vines are still raised uncorked.
