Murcia, the southernmost part of Levante (it includes Castellón, Valencia, Alicante, and Murcia), lies in Spain's East, on the Mediaterranean coast. The wines from this region are typically Mediterranean - strong and high in alcohol.
Murcia has the following three DO (origin designation): Jumilla, Yecla, and Bullas. The wines from Jumilla and Yecla are made from the dark Monastrell vine. Since this vine was spared from the phylloxera vastatrix, the vines didn't have to be put onto American soil (like others had to in oarts of Spain and Europe).
