Some vintners make excellent wines - the reputation of this young appellation is still shaky. The concentration lies in red wines with lots of strength and good concentration.
This district got its AOC in 1984, and is so a young appellation in the Provence. The quality still sways a bit, but the reputation of Côtes d‘Aix-en-Provence is constantly increasing, There are no internal classifications.
At three quarters production, the red wines dominate, they present themselves with strength and good concentration and storage potential. The remaining quarter is taken up by rosé wines. White wines are mde in very small amounts, they are usually light, without body or concentration. The vines grow on meagre, rocky ground that is blended with limestone and clay-slate.
The vines are classic Rhône-vnes such as Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Grenache, as well as a parge part Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Clairette, Marsanne, Picpoul, Ugni Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are among the white vines cultivated.
