For a long time wines of subtle quality and port wines were produced here, but today the best wines are made from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in Adelaide Hills.
The first vines were planted outside of Adelaide, Austrialia's largest wine region, in 1838. Shortly after that viniculture was begun in Barossa Valley and Clare Valley, though only with little success. The most important growing areas are in Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, and Coonawarra in Southern Austrialia. The production of bulk wines is mostly concetrated to the Riverland, along the Murray River.
The geographical and geological conditions in this large region are different and reach from limesotne ground to hilly, slate soils in the Barossa area. The climate also offers a wide spectrum. There are cool areas, that remind of the conditions of the Champagne, as well as hot areas, that require artificial irrigation.
Three different wine types can be attached to certain areas. Coonawarra is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Clare Valley makes a good Riesling, and Barossa Valley raised Shiraz. Southern Austrialia is known worldwide for its red wines.
