Though viniculture was only introduced here in 1973, the wines from these vintners are excellent. The Sauvignon Blanc made here is one of the best in the world.
In the country's sunniest climate the grapes grow on the Wairau plains, outside the small community of Blenheim. The ripening period is long and balanced thanks to the cool nights. Flat, rocky, and gravelly riverbeds are the dominant soil.
The popular wines from Sauvignon Blanc are slightly oaky and elegant, with an aroma of gooseberries. The Chardonnay wines are undeservedly in shadow in Marlborough. The wines are oaky, but light and are because of their good quality among the country's best. Good Riesling winesa re also made here. Cabernet Sauvignon mades wines of a Cabernet Franc spice. Towards the end of the 1990's the untilled vineyards were planted with Pinot Noir. The sparkling wines are made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The grapes are generally picked by machines, the production methods are modern.
